On January 1, 1804, Haiti became the world’s first free Black republic, born from a revolution of enslaved people. That fire runs through everything Zuri makes.
Soup Joumou
The freedom soup. Once kept from the enslaved, it’s now eaten by Haitian families every New Year’s Day, and UNESCO added it to its cultural heritage list in 2021.
Rara & tanbou
In the weeks before Easter, rara bands fill the streets with drums, bamboo horns and singing. That pulse is in Zuri’s music, and in Bat Tanbou.
